Thorlabs offers high-performance, dielectric supermirror coatings on Ø1" substrates that are ideal for constructing high-finesse optical reference cavities and any applications requiring the highest reflectance possible.

At-a-glance:

  • Mirrors for High-Finesse Optical Reference Cavities
  • Ø8 mm IBD Coating on Ø1", 1/4" Thick Fused Silica
  • Wavelength Options: 1156 nm or 1550 nm
  • Up to 300 000 Finesse for a Two-Mirror System

Plano and concave options with ion-beam deposited (IBD) dielectric coatings at 1156 nm or 1550 nm are available from stock. Optical reference cavities constructed from two of the 1156 nm or 1550 nm supermirrors will have finesse exceeding 300 000 or 250 000, respectively. The finesse of the 1156 nm supermirror cavity is specified in vacuum while the 1550 nm mirrors can achieve the specified finesse in air.

The back side of each dielectric supermirror is AR coated for the same center wavelength as the reflective coating on the front face. A caret is engraved on the thicker side of the 30 arcmin wedged substrate, indicating the face with the high-reflectance dielectric coating. Both faces of the optic are super-polished so that they can be optically contacted to cavity spacers or compensation rings. Compensation rings for stabilizing the zero-crossing temperature of the coefficient of thermal expansion in high-finesse optical reference cavities are sold below.

These high-performance supermirrors with ultra-low optical absorption are key ingredients for the construction of optical atomic clocks, compact optical reference cavities, and stabilized lasers, as well as the next generation of gravitational wave detectors. For applications requiring extreme thermal stability and low elastic loss, we also offer crystalline supermirrors that reduce thermo-mechanical (i.e., Brownian) noise when compared to these IBD coatings.
