| Open source PET electronics reduces time to build PET systems |
SensL, manufacturers of solid-state solutions for low-light-level sensing, have announced a a joint collaboration with Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL) to produce open source PET (Positron Emission Tomography) system electronics. Companies and researchers who wish to rapidly develop PET and SPECT systems can now do so with the use of an open source PET electronics specification (OpenPET). Designers who adopt OpenPET will benefit from faster system design and a worldwide network of users who will maintain and improve the system architecture on a collaborative basis. The system is based around a flexible PET and SPECT system architecture which has been designed for use with a variety of detector front ends. The system electronics, firmware and software will provide everything that is required to build PET and SPECT systems. Initial system design will be optimized for use with SensL's Silicon Photomultiplier, PMT replacement detector technology . “You don't cure cancer with electronics but many researchers and companies spend a large amount of time and money developing bespoke electronic systems before they can start doing their work. I hope that having electronics freely available will speed up the development of new and innovative systems which doctors, clinicians and researchers can put to good use,” explains Dr. Carl Jackson (CTO at SensL). "One of the biggest challenges facing disruptive technology companies like SensL is readily available electronics which users can take and modify and use to build complex systems. If you look to the open source software movement, which uses collaboration rather than competition to improve the core software code, you can see how quickly technology can progress when people work together. We hope to bring the same level of innovation and cooperation to nuclear medicine. If you are a researcher or small company starting out, you should be spending your time developing your system and your markets and not worrying about the back end electronics which you need to help you get the job done,” adds Jackson. The draft specification is available online at http://openpet.lbl.gov/ . SensL and LBNL hope to receive user feedback until the end of June 2009 and will commence full system design once the nuclear medicine community has had a chance to provide input into the project. About SensL SensL provides low light sensing solutions to the market. Their goal is to provide the best solution for each customer application through the use of their breakthrough technology or through the integration of other commercially available detector products with their electronics. They provide standard as well as customizable and flexible products to suit customer requirements for a variety of application areas including: PET/MRI, Confocal Microscopy, Hand-held Radiation Detection, Microfluidic Cytometry, Spectroscopy and High Energy Physics.
