High-powered hand-held laser pointers have become a significant hazard to law-enforcement officers and pilots, as they can induce a temporary and dazzling flash/glare blindness. The sudden loss of vision from even a low-power laser pointer illumination can be disorienting and debilitating, yet standard sunglasses and typical safety goggles provide virtually no protection from these hazards.

NoIR GlareShields™ laser pointer filters provide sufficient protection from the disabling effects of intentional or incidental laser pointer hits without compromising the wearer’s ability to perform on the job. All NoIR GlareShields™ provide full daylight UV and glare protection along with laser safety. But since the flash-blindness effect of a laser pointer illumination is much more pronounced at night, NoIR offers two GlareShields™ designed for use in low light conditions. GlareShields™ optimize protection from the beam with Optical Densities (ODs) between 1-2.5 (absorbing 90-99.5% of the beam energy), while still allowing visibility of the beam spot (for point source location), all without compromising visual acuity or display panel color recognition.

LaserBee 5 is the industry-leading laser safety software, now available from Lastek. It is a complete solution for every aspect of managing laser safety. LaserBee complies with EN 60825-1, EN 60825-2, EN 60825-14, EN 207, EN 208 and IEC or BS equivalents; it deals with CW, single pulse or repetitively pulsed freespace laser or fibre-optic sources over the complete range of wavelengths and times specified in the standards listed above; it calculates Accessible Emission Limits (AEL), Maximum Permissible Exposures (MPE), Nominal Ocular Hazard Distance (NOHD); Extended Nominal Ocular Hazard Distance (ENOHD) and performs laser classification; and offers much more besides.

We offer eyewear that conforms to AS/NZS 1337.4 and AS/NZS 1337.5 (equivalent to European standards EN207 and EN208) or if no filter is available that meets the your specific requirements according to EN 207/EN207 Lastek will recommend a filter/glasses that is correct according to the OD requirements of EN60825 and is as close as possible to the requirements of EN 207/EN208. In cases like these it means that the laser safety glasses we quote will always have the correct Optical Density but the stability time of 10 seconds/100 pulses cannot be guaranteed and where available we will give reference to an approximate stability time of the filters when exposed to a laser with the parameters you provide us with.

Where we cannot provide you with glasses that meet the requirements of EN207 for the raw beam it is recommended that you discuss the situation with your laser safety officer and arrange for other protection measures to be put in place to limit exposure to the beam. It is also often recommended that the laser safety officer contacts whomever is responsible for your liability insurance.
