    The Thorlabs VRC6 MIR laser viewing card is designed for use with wavelengths from 1.5 µm to at least 13.2 µm, as shown by testing results. The detector area on this card is a thin layer of liquid crystal that has been printed onto the black metal card. Thermochromic liquid crystals are temperature-sensitive organic chemicals with twisted helical molecular structures. The MIR light changes the temperature of the detector area, resulting in a color change. The detector area is green between 25 and 30 °C, and it is black or brown otherwise. Simply tap the card on a tabletop to return the color to the resting state.

    The detection region extends all the way to the edge of the card in order to facilitate the use of the card during alignment procedures, and each card features two engraved reticles for use in laser beam collimation.

    Thorlabs offers four Adaptive Optics Kit options, two that incorporate 140 actuator Multi-DM deformable mirrors and two that incorporate 32 actuator Mini-DM deformable mirrors. AOK1-UM01 and AOK2-UM01 contains a DM with a gold mirror coating, while AOK1-UP01 and AOK2-UP01 contain a DM with an aluminum mirror coating. When combined with the WFS150-5C wavefront sensor, these kits are designed for use in the 600 - 1100 nm range and the 400 - 1100 nm range, respectively. Regardless of the kit chosen, the three constituent components provide a closed-loop sample rate of 8 Hz when in the correction mode.     Thorlabs' Michelson Interferometer Demonstration Kit highlights several ways that an interferometer can be used to take highly sensitive measurements. A laser and LEDs allow students to explore the concept of interference and examine how the coherence length of different light sources will affect the interferometer output. The interferometer can be aligned to produce white light interference using the included white LED, as shown in the photo to the right. Students can also use the setup to determine the refractive index of Plexiglas plates and the thermal expansion coefficient of an aluminum rod.

The Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), which is built in the swept light source, provides the frequency clock signal for the laser.

    The Thorlabs Swept Source OCT is a frequency domain OCT technique that measures the magnitude and time delay of reflected light in order to construct depth profiles (A-scans) in the sample being imaged. Adjacent A-scans are then taken and all the images combined to create a 3D image. The design integrates a broadband, high-speed swept laser and a fiber-based Michelson interferometer with a balanced detection scheme. The multifunctional system includes an integrated CCD camera which provides simultaneous en-face and cross-sectional OCT imaging of the sample. The system includes a handheld probe that can be mounted onto an adjustable XYZ stage for a more stable imaging platform.

    Thorlabs' VytranTM Polyimide Fiber Recoater with Proof Tester offers an easy, integrated solution to recoat and test fusion-spliced fibers. The recoating process uses a translating die to apply a polyimide resin along the length of the recoated section, up to 50 mm in length. One pass can apply a Ø3 µm - Ø10 µm coat of resin, and multiple passes can be made for higher reliability and increased coating diameter. The recoat process is fully programmable; by setting parameters such as injection rate and the velocity of the die, the diameter of the recoat per pass can be set. Dual heater filaments in the die thermally cure the recoated section of fiber with each pass. The restored buffer coating gives the fiber the same flexibility as when originally manufactured, making this device ideal for applications that require handling and coiling of fusion-spliced fibers. Due to handling and storage constraints, we do not offer polyimide recoat material.

  • Thorlabs: Liquid Crystal Noise Eater for 1050 - 1620nm

    Thorlabs’ new Liquid Crystal Noise Eaters / Laser Amplitude Stabilizers are precision instruments for stabilizing, modulating, and attenuating the power of linearly polarized light. These closed-loop systems are designed for use with light in the 425 - 650 nm (LCC3111), 650 - 1100 nm (LCC3112), and now also available for the 1050 - 1620 nm (LCC3113) wavelength range.

    Utilizing a liquid crystal amplitude modulator, combined with a photodiode for power measurement and a feedback control circuit, the Noise Eaters can eliminate intensity noise in linearly polarized light, achieving amplitude stabilization of within 0.05% of a selected output power. The input power can be set to one of four ranges using the switch on the top of the unit. The potentiometer is then adjusted to select the output power. Long-term performance and frequency characterization for each noise eater model are shown on the Performance tabs.

    ThorlabsOTKB (OTKB/M) Optical Tweezer Kit consists of five pre-assembled segments with which optical tweezers, also known as an optical trap, can be constructed. The advantage to purchasing and assembling this kit is the flexibility it provides over other closed optical tweezer systems. Since the optical tweezer system is built using standard Thorlabs' components, it is easy to modify or upgrade the system using other standard components. The kit is shipped in pre-assembled segments and will only require final coupling of segments and alignment. A step-by-step assembly instruction manual is provided with each kit.

    Thorlabs' Optical Spectrum Analyzers (OSAs) perform highly accurate measurements of the spectra of unknown light sources. The new model OSA206 has just been released, covering the 3.3 - 8.0 µm (3030 - 1250 cm-1) region.

    These compact instruments suit a wide range of applications, such as analyzing the spectrum of a telecom signal, resolving the Fabry-Perot modes of a gain chip, and identifying gas absorption lines in a spectral measurement.
