piezosystem Jena: Collimators for X-ray techniques

piezosystem Jena: collimators for Xray technique

piezosystem jena  have announced a new piezo based collimator system for X-Ray techniques.

Current techniques in X-Ray microscopy, crystallography and small angle x-ray scattering require extremely well-collimated beams. In order to achieve the best signal to noise ratio in an x-ray system, the aperture size should be as closely matched as possible to the sample size.

Most X-ray systems use a pinhole aperture that has been drilled or laser ablated from a tungsten or tantalum disk of material. In practice this means that for every new sample size, the pinhole should be removed and a new size inserted.

A solution was developed in cooperation with Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.Based on two piezo driven slit sy stems of the series PZS 4 (part number: O-101-xx), a collimator for X-Ray techniques was made. The PZS stages are mounted of 90° in respect to each other. Because of the high resolution piezo element, the slit edges can be adjusted precisely to the required size.

With a resolution of <8 nm the system is the most accurate variable aperture system commercially available. The open architecture of the PZS slit system design allows for easy integration into a variety of X-Ray systems. A V-clamp holder allows the customer to add his own or our accessories. The entire system can be made vacuum compatible.

Quantronix Applications Focus: 2D IR Spectroscopy

 Quantronix

From Quantronix : 2-dimensional infrared spectroscopy is of fundamental interest to vibrational spectroscopists, as it allows observation of coupling between various normal modes. The results obtained from performing the experiment provide useful information ranging from energy redistribution within a molecular system due to coupling between different states, to determination of angles of transition dipoles associated with the modes.

The technique is performed using femtosecond lasers; in the frequency-domain scheme, a single narrowband pump pulse is used to excite a vibrational mode within a system, and a second broadband probe pulse explores the state of the system at a given time delay after the pump pulse.  A 2-dimensional plot is obtained by graphing the probe spectrum as the pump frequency is varied. In the time-domain scheme, an initial pump pulse prepares a coherence between the vibrational modes of the system, and a second pulse stores the phase information induced by the pump pulse within populations of states.  A final pulse produces another coherence, which, once in phase again, emits an "echo" pulse that, when heterodyned with a local oscillator, reveals intensity and phase information on the vibrational modes' interactions.  The resulting data, compared to a linear infrared absorption spectrum, shows not only the ground state information along the diagonal of the plot, but the coupling and relationships of the various modes to each other.

Semrock MyLight: Manage your spectra online

 Semrock MyLight

MyLight , Semrock 's new online filter modeling tool, provides users with the ability to characterize optical filters under varying theoretical conditions in real time. Interested in seeing how a Semrock catalog filter behaves under a particular angle of incidence, polarization or cone half angle? MyLight can provide you with the theoretical answers by simply entering your parameters and selecting “Generate Plot.” MyLight data can also be saved, re-drawn and printed.

Traditionally, optical filter data was presented at normal angles of incidence, average polarization assuming collimated incident light. But what if your system utilized a tilted filter and/or a cone of illumination? What if you were interested in the possibility of angle tuning a filter to optimize it to your specifications? In the past, you had to contact the manufacturer and wait for an answer. With MyLight, you can input your conditions, click Generate Plot, and immediately evaluate that filter’s theoretical data set. Designing and evaluating interference optical filters has never been easier. MyLight puts the power of optical filter modeling and evaluation at your fingertips. MyLight may be accessed from each filter's specific page, above the actual measured data spectra.

Semrock are the leading supplier of optical filters. They offer a wealth of essential filters for fluorescence microscopy, fluorescence instruments, raman spectroscopy, biomedical optics and laser/optical systems. Contact Lastek today for further information.

Semrock's revolutionary Versachrome widely tunable thin film filter

Semrock's new Versachrome filter

Thin-film interference filters are usually the ideal solution for wavelength selection in optical systems, due to their exceptionally high transmission, very steep spectral edges and blocking over OD6 or higher over wide spectral regions for maximum noise suppression. Until now though, they have had one major drawback: they are essentially fixed in their spectral characteristics. Semrock 's revolutionary new Versachrome filter changes all this. Now for the first time: thin film filters that are tunable over a wide range of wavelengths, simply by adjusting the angle of incidence, and with essentially no change in spectral performance. Wide tunability is possible, up to 60°, for both edge and bandpass filters, as shown below.

Semrock Versachrome

The Versachrome filter was one of the ten winners of the Second Annual Microscopy Today Innovation Awards. Contact us today to learn more, or for more detailed local pricing. Or click for further information, including a discussion on Spectral Imaging with VersaChrome Filters, below.

High speed visualization of a droplet impacting a dry surface

Liquid splash

Figure 1: Splash is suppressed when the ambient air pressure is reduced. A drop 3.4mm in diameter of ethanol colliding with a surface at a speed of 3.74 ms-2 splashes at atmospheric pressure (top panel) but spreads smoothly at 0.172 atmospheres (bottom panel). Pictures taken from Xu,. Zhang, and Nagel (2005)

Quantum Composers model 9528 Digital Delay Pulse Generators has been incorporated for use as a timing system at Brown University, of Providence, RI, in a research project which has begun to reveal the hidden mysteries of how liquid droplets splash.

The mechanism behind liquid droplet splashing on a smooth dry surface is not completely understood. It was recently discovered that reducing ambient pressure can suppress splashing altogether. Shreyas Mandre, Assistant Professor, School of Engineering, Brown University and colleagues have created an experiment setup to explore this phenomenon.

Brown’s system utilizes a Quantum Composers 9528 Digital Delay Generator to facilitate experiment timing. First, the pulse generator is triggered by the droplet disrupting an optical circuit consisting of a continuous laser source and a photodiode detector. Next, a suitable delay is added to allow the droplet to fall into position.

NoIR Laser Shields: Protection Against Laser Pointer Induced Glare and Flash Blindness

Flight Deck Test of CE-certified NoIR Laser Shield

High-powered hand-held laser pointers have become a significant hazard to law-enforcement officers and pilots, as they can induce a temporary and dazzling flash/glare blindness. The sudden loss of vision from even a low-power laser pointer illumination can be disorienting and debilitating, yet standard sunglasses and typical safety goggles provide virtually no protection from these hazards.

NoIR Pilot eyewear

NoIR GlareShields™ laser pointer filters provide sufficient protection from the disabling effects of intentional or incidental laser pointer hits without compromising the wearer’s ability to perform on the job. All NoIR GlareShields™ provide full daylight UV and glare protection along with laser safety. But since the flash-blindness effect of a laser pointer illumination is much more pronounced at night, NoIR offers two GlareShields™ designed for use in low light conditions. GlareShields™ optimize protection from the beam with Optical Densities (ODs) between 1-2.5 (absorbing 90-99.5% of the beam energy), while still allowing visibility of the beam spot (for point source location), all without compromising visual acuity or display panel color recognition.
