Ames Photonics announces the Oculus Challenge


We've been impressed by the new Oculus USB Photodetectors from our friends at Ames Photonics. Now, Ames have announced the Oculus Challenge: two Oculus systems will be given away free to customers who come up with the most creative and innovative applications for this smart new device. From the Ames website:

"Oculus is the latin word for "eye", and in classical times, referred to the round opening at the top of the roof of the Pantheon and other buildings. Oculus is also the name for Ames Photonics innovative new USB detector system, released commercially in 2009. This convenient, plug-n-play laboratory essential is proving to be a very popular tool in a wide range of applications. For example, at Swinburne University, in Melbourne, Australia, researchers have used the Oculus in conjunction with other Ames Photonics tools to detect and measure output from a multibeam ultrafast laser spectroscopy experiment. Oculus provides the means to enable correlated single-pulse measurements, providing an efficient, cost-effective solution to this problem.  Read their report here.

NASA, Ocean Optics and the discovery of water on the moon

Ocean Optics go to the moon

Last week, NASA announced the stunning discovery of water on the moon. This followed the deliberate crashing of a probe onto the lunar surface in October as part of the space agency's Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite(LCROSS) mission.

The key measurements which enabled NASA scientists to conclude that water is definitely present on earth's nearest neighbour were made with a spectrometer which was designed and built by Ocean Optics. Known as ALICE, the instrument was a modified version of their highly sensitive model QE6500 spectrometer. It had to be sufficiently rugged to withstand the stresses of the journey and the crash-landing arrival, and then to function in the moon's extremely harsh environmental conditions. The success of the mission is testament to Ocean Optics unmatched capabilities in providing spectroscopic solutions for even the most demanding applications.

Light Pipe Homogenising rods from Edmund Optics utilize total internal reflection to turn a non-uniform light source into uniform illumination. Also known as integrating rods or light pipes, they can be used to alter the spatial distribution of the source to provide more uniformity. The hexagonal configuration in these light pipes provides 35% less light lost when filling the clear aperture, than would a comparable square configuration. These glass rods can be used to mix and homogenize single or multiple point sources regardless of their individual spectral characteristics.

Quantum Composers

Quantum Composers, leading manufacturers of precision pulse and digital delay generators, have announced two important new upgrades to existing product lines. Firstly, the recently released 9520 series of Digital Delay Pulse Generators now offers full programming compatibility with the Stanford Research DG535, providing a convenient upgrade path for existing Stanford users to migrate to Quantum Composers instruments whilst retaining existing code. Secondly, a new high-voltage output module has also been released for the 9520 series. The new model AT-45 offers significantly improved performance over its predecessor including faster rise/fall times below 2ns and longer pulse widths to 1 second.
