New from Andover: Hard-coated narrowband filters

Hard coat prod l

Andover Corporation's first-surface, hard-coat narrowband filters employ magnetron sputtered, hard-oxide coatings deposited on Borosilicate Glass and do not utilize any absorbing filter glasses, making them suitable for high temperature applications. They provide a steep transition from a high, peak transmission to OD4 blocking. Available at wavelengths from 334nm to 1550nm, including all major laser lines and atomic absorption lines. All filters are mounted in black anodized aluminum rings to provide protection and easy identification.

LaVision: Large scale volumetric particle image velocimetry measurements were performed at a large Volkswagen wind tunnel

3235 47 car in wind tunnel

Flow seeding was done with LaVision’s Helium-filled Soap Bubble Generator

The flow behind a full size serial car without modifications has been successfully measured at 60 km/h and 120 km/h with four LaVision high-speed cameras at 1450 frames per second in a wind tunnel at Volkswagen. The seeding rack, which emitted the 300 µm Helium-filled soap bubbles for seeding the flow, consisted of 6 x 10 nozzles in a vertical line and a overall height of 3.5 meters. The field of view was 4 m2 with 200 mm depth.

Lasers in the News

Dancing Weyl cones: When excited by tailored laser pulses (white spiral), the cones in a Dirac fermion material dance on a path (8-shape) that can be controlled by the laser light. This turns a Dirac material into a Weyl material, changing the nature of the quasiparticles in it. One of the cones hosts right-handed Weyl fermions; the other cone hosts left-handed ones. Laser Quantum: The gem vs. the wacker plate!

The Laser Quantum gem is a compact laser from their continuous wave range; it has been faced with a number of challenges over the previous months to demonstrate its robustness and reliability. After battling with (and winning against) a Range Rover, gravity and Arctic conditions, the gem is being put through its paces yet again. This time the gem faces the wacker plate, a vibrating compactor machine, often used by builders. This is the ultimate vibration test outside of the lab. Watch the latest video now to find out if the gem survives…
