Ocean Optics ecoVis VIS-NIR Light Source

Ocean Optics EcoVIS

Ocean Optics ecoVis is a compact, low-voltage VIS-NIR light source (400-2500 nm) with built-in cuvette holder that’s great for basic lab measurements in teaching labs and other research environments.

The ecoVis has a rugged, solid alloy housing that helps to dissipate heat and in-line fiber ports for absorbance and fluorescence measurements.

ecoVis is small – it’s just 95 mm x 50 mm and weighs 265 g – making it attractive for labs where space is at a premium. Also, the unit has a built-in 1 cm pathlength cuvette holder and a chromium-plated reflective insert that increases the output for fluorescence, can be adjusted through 90º to block the light path for dark measurements and holds the cuvette securely in place.

Recommended Uses
ecoVis is designed for absorbance and fluorescence of cuvette-based samples. Its rugged housing and simple design make it useful for teaching labs and setups where basic absorbance and fluorescence measurements are performed routinely.For setups involving probes and other accessories, the HL-2000 tungsten halogen source is a better option. Unlike ecoVis, the HL-2000 has a filter slot and shutter and is available in a high-power version.

Recommended Fibers
Your best bet for absorbance measurements is a 50 µm patch cord optimized for the VIS-NIR; ourQP50-2-VIS-NIR is a good choice. For fluorescence, a larger core diameter fiber like our QP400-2-VIS-NIR is a great option. 

Fluorescence Applications
In ecoVis, the light source can be used as a broadband excitation source for fluorescence. Because one of the ecoVis fiber input ports is positioned at right angles to the light path, most of the excitation wavelengths will be prevented from overlapping with the emission wavelengths. But not all of them. That’s where a source like the HL-2000, which has a built-in filter slot, is better able to block excitation wavelengths.

Sample Spectra
The ecoVis response shown here was first measured with a VIS-NIR spectrometer (top graph) and then with an NIR spectrometer. No one spectrometer captures the continuous 400-2500 nm range.
